The simplest way to tell if a radiator needs bleeding is the bottom half or pipes are hot and top cold. Todo this you will need a bleed key & rag, open bleed valve (you may hear the air) when you see water close valve. If you have a sealed system you may need to top up system pressure if gauge is below 1bar

The best way to tell if your radiators around your home require bleeding, is to have the central heating running if the radiators are hot at the bottom but cold towards the top they need venting. Get your bleed key and vent from either top left or top right. Open vety slowly until you hear air coming out. Keep towel or tissue as once water comes out of vent job done

If the radiator is hot at the bottom and cold at the top it needs bleeding as the top of the radiator is full of gas/air and the heated water is is only heating the bottom of the rad. If you need to bleed your radiator, have a rag handy and only open the bleed point 1/4 of a turn. Keep the bleed key/screwdriver in place as once the air is dispelled water will come out under pressure. As soon as water comes out close the drain off and if you have a sealed sytem check the pressure guage is reading above 1bar.

A common fault on a heating system is that your radiator will become cold at the top and warm at the bottom this will mean that air has become trapped at the top of radiator most radiators have a bleed point witch you can fit a radiator key to some have a flat bladed screwdriver slot which is the same you need to have something to catch water in release the bleed point slowly until you hear air once this has cleared the water will come out close the bleed point the radiator should now become warm if you have a combination boiler check the water pressure may need topping up at this point to 1/1.5 bar if you have conventional system with a header tank this will fill on its own

Your radiator will need bleeding if the top of the radiator is significantly colder than the bottom. Make sure you know how to top up your system should it be necessary before you start as you may cause your system to shut down due to low pressure. It is rare that a radiator should need bleeding as modern systems do not require it like they did many years ago.

You will know if your radiator needs bleeding as when the heating is on the bottom of the radiator will be warm/hot and the top will be cool/cold. If the top of the radiator is warm/hot but the bottom is cold/cool then this is a different problem and not air in the radiator. If your not sure how to bleed them call an engineer.

If your radiator is suffering with cold spots, or your heating system is noisy when it fires up, this may mean you have air in the system. Bleeding the radiators may assist with this, however, it’s always a good idea to chat to a qualified engineer who might be able to recognise a fault.
